Ex-Attorney General for Hire

Leave it to the ever pious John Ashcroft to blaze a new trail in sleazy lobbying practices. I know the jump from public servant to private trough feeder is not exclusive to Republicans, but it seems the latest wave associated with the Bush Adminstration - from the whole K Street debacle to Iraq contracts to Ashcroft's follies - pushes the envelope exponentially.

While Ashcroft's lobbying is within government rules for former officials, it is nonetheless a departure from the practice of attorneys general for at least the last 30 years.

Yes, everyone does it, but these folks do it with a zeal unmatched by their pedestrian predecessors.

No shame. None.
