Random Thoughts on the Judiciary...or, Shut Up Already

Just a few observations on the Alito hearings after another sporadic, 20 minute dose:

1) If Chuck Schumer wants to rally public opinion against Alito, he really needs to hone his debate skills. When you say "stare decisis" that many times in that short a time frame, even the most ardent admirer of fancy constitutional terms will tune out. And, his logic trail to conclude that Alito would overturn Roe was painful to listen to and tortured sounding - and I agree with him.

2) John Cornyn apparently had some sort of chart made identifying Sandra Day O'Connor as the "model Supreme Court Justice" and did a (tortured, again) point by point comparison of the similarities between Alito and O'Connor. I'm guessing that, in private conversations over the years and after some specific decisions, Cornyn had a slightly different moniker for O'Connor.

My knowledge of the specifics of Roe is...well, limited would be charitable, but there's certainly no reason why Chuck, sitting on the Judiciary Committee and staunchly pro-choice, shouldn't be intimately familiar with both the ruling and the concept of free speech. And he's one of the better ones.

Thanks for the comment.
